The stomach and oesophagus are part of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the digestive system. The oesophagus is a long tube like structure that transport fluids, food and saliva from the mouth and throat to the stomach. The stomach is a muscular hallow part in the upper side of the abdomen which is located between the end of the oesophagus and the starting of the small intestine. Stomach and oesophagus cancers are malignant type of tumors and started from the mucosa.
Oesophageal cancer
Oesophageal cancer can occur anywhere in various types of cells present in the oesophagus. The main types of oesophagus cancer are
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Adenocarcinoma
Oesophageal cancer can grow into the nearby organs and structures. It most commonly spread into the liver and lymph nodes. It can also block the wind pipe, lungs and the heart lining.
Stomach cancer
Stomach (Gastric) cancer is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells occur in the stomach lining of the upper stomach (abdomen) which is responsible for digestion of food. Most of the stomach cancers are initiated from the cells that are producing mucus and other fluids and known as adenocarcinomas. Other kinds of stomach cancer are gastrointestinal stromal tumour, gastrointestinal carcinoid tumor, and lymphomas.
The common symptoms of stomach and oesophageal cancer are
- difficulties in swallowing
- bloody vomiting
- bloody stools
- nausea
- jaundice
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- regular heartburn
- constant bloating
- stomach pain after having the meal and extreme fatigue.
Diagnosis of the stomach and oesophageal cancer can be performed by an upper GI endoscopy, biopsy and Imaging tests such as CT scans and X-ray.

- Immuno therapy such as mediation and vaccines
- Stomach surgery
